Irene Borgna, Nives Meroi
High-Altitude gratitude
Mountaineers, the "conquerors of the useless," as Lionel Terray called them. At the summit, there is nothing — just the earth coming to an end, marking the boundary of human territory. So what do they see up there? The simple pleasure of climbing rocks and snow? A seemingly purposeless luxury, yet one that ignites in the soul the feeling that makes us human, as we search for our own personal ode to life and its simplicity. The Italian mountaineer Nives Meroi, in conversation with writer Irene Borgna, will tell us about endless landscapes and the strength that comes from climbing together: "Even on the highest peaks of the planet, it never occurred to me to raise my arms in triumph; rather, crouching on the ground, it always felt natural to say thank you."
Irene Borgna moved from the sea to the Maritime Alps after a degree in Philosophy and a doctorate in Alpine anthropology. Today she lives and works in the mountains and writes about mountains. She has published “ll pastore di stambecchi” (Ponte alle Grazie, 2018), “Sulle Alpi” (Editoriale Scienza, 2020), “Cieli neri” (Ponte alle Grazie, 2021), “Manuale per giovani stambecchi” (Salani, 2022).
Nives Meroi is among the greatest mountaineers in history. She has climbed the great classics of the Alps and faced expeditions to South America, the Himalayas and Karakorum. With her husband Romano, she climbed all fourteen eight-thousanders without oxygen cylinders, climbing Sherpas and pre-set camps for the first time. She has published with Rizzoli “Non ti farò aspettare” (2015) and “Il volo del corvo timido” (2020); with Fabbri “Sinai” (with V. Mancuso, 2017); with Skira “Montagne. I giganti della terra” (2021).
