A free city: why cities should not be shopping centres
From an early age, children learn that cities are like paid clubs, where you need to pay for everything: to move, to sit, to eat, to do sports and enjoy your free time. But where do they learn that cities are common goods to be shared, where nature and space belong to everyone? We should rewrite the rules of what is possible, focusing on what can and should be done for free in public spaces. Swimmable rivers, courtyards where children can play, shady playgrounds with clay or grass surfaces, church forecourts where people can sit in the evening, free spaces for sports, community gardens, and free public transportation. Areas of non-consumption or with free access. The civic culture of a city should be measured by the number of activities that can be enjoyed without paying.
Elena Granata, professor of Urban Planning at the Politecnico di Milano, is vice-president of the School of Civil Economy. She was a member of the Sherpa Staff, Presidency of the Council of Ministers, G7/G20 (2020-21) on biodiversity issues. Among her books: “Biodivercity” (Giunti, 2019); “Placemaker” (Einaudi, 2021); “Ecolove” (with F. de Lettera, Edizioni Ambiente, 2022); “Il senso delle donne per la città” (Einaudi, 2023).
Annalisa Metta is Professor of Landscape Architecture at Roma Tre University. She is the co-founder of Osa studio (Bosco Italia, Italian Pavilion, Venice Architecture Biennale, 2012; Sangallo school gardens, 2024; park on Lungotevere Flaminio, 2018-24; installation Every 9 Days, 2022). His books include: “Verso sud” (Libria, 2018), “Il paesaggio è un mostro” (DeriveApprodi, 2022), “Alberi!” (Marsilio Arte, 2022).
