Why write in the first person? In a world that is increasingly overrun with television series and fiction, where more and more often we are induced to hide behind the protective anonymity of the Internet, what does it mean to speak without the conventional filters of literary fiction? Moreover, is the person saying “I” only ever the author? Two writers – the Dutch Frank Westerman and the Italian Mauro Covacich – investigate and exchange thoughts on the responsibility that comes from the word “I” in contemporary literature, from Westerman’s perspective as a reporter and writer of narrative non-fiction to Covacich’s experience in the autobiographical genre he has long been exploring. Ranging from the exact precision of realism to fiction and the love for storytelling, a voyage into the world of writing and the ability to always put yourself to the test.

He has written several fiction books, including: Fiona (Einaudi, 2005), Trieste sottosopra (Laterza, 2006), Prima di sparire (Einaudi, 2008), A nome tuo (Einaudi, 2011) and L’esperimento (Einaudi, 2013). He is also the author of the video-installation L’umiliazione delle stelle (Fondazione Buziol, Einaudi, Magazzino d’Arte Moderna, Rome, 2010). His latest book is called La sposa (Bompiani, 2014).
After his training in science, he became a freelance journalist in the most troubled areas of the world. He is the author of travel novels which have been translated across Europe, such as Ingegneri di anime, Ararat and Pura razza bianca, which have won many awards on the subject of racism, culture, identity and power. All of his books are published by Iperborea. His latest book "La notte del 21 agosto" will be released in August.
