2015 Programme
Event #2
Jim Al-Khalili
The secret ingredient of life
As often occurs in science, discovery can come from an unexpected field. For some time, quantum physics has represented a breaking point in biology: we are beginning to understand what happens deep within living cells and to explain phenomena which for centuries had seemed inexplicable. The incredible power of photosynthesis, for instance, seems to reside in the fact that, due to quantum effects, the particles it involves are simultaneously located in two distinct places. Are we a step away from understanding the secret ingredient of life? The strange world of quantum dynamics and the elusive complexity of life come together in a new field of study, the field of “quantum biology”, which will be discussed long into the future.
