Piero Maranghi

Grateful and ungrateful: a semi-serious journey through music history

Composer and librettist, artist and patron, student and teacher: the interplay between these figures shapes the world of music through ever-changing dynamics. How do values like gratitude and ingratitude manifest in the life of a great composer? Through anecdotes, episodes, and significant events, Piero Maranghi offers portraits of famously grateful and ungrateful individuals, audaciously redeemed characters, and noble souls in a semi-serious narrative spanning two centuries of music history. From the Verdi-Wagner pairing to the contentious relationship between Stravinsky and Diaghilev, including Rossini’s clashes and reconciliations with Barbaja, Benjamin Britten's habit of dumping friends and colleagues, and the absolute friendship between Rachmaninoff and the legendary bass Chaliapin.
