Event #12
Sabrina Speich
Wonderful, immense sea
The sea is far away, so immense as to seem abstract: one cannot live there, vote or own private property. It fascinates poets, novelists and those who stroll along its shores on a windy day. But it is also a source of wonder for scientists who reveal its nature, its complex but ordered movements, its richness, diversity and beauty, and its impact on so many aspects of life on land and on human society. Our existence is inseparable from that of the sea, a sea that is unfortunately changing rapidly today. Faced with these changes, science has decided to join forces with the UN to tackle a challenge that could put the survival of some living beings at risk.
https://www.festivaldellamente.it/it/live-streaming-alessandro-barbero/Sabrina Speich was born in Milan and lives in Paris. Passionate about the sea and sailing from her earliest years, she discovered science and in particular physics during high school. She then decided to bring her passions together and become an oceanographer physicist. Later, for work, she had the opportunity to live on different seas and continents as a lecturer in Oceanography and Climate Science. Today, she is a professor at the École normale supérieure in Paris and a member of the Pierre-Simon Laplace Climate Institute. She conducts research on the role of the ocean on climate and marine biodiversity. She also chairs various committees for climate and the ocean, under the aegis of the World Meteorological Organisation and the UN. She is a member of the European Academy of Sciences and was awarded the Albert Defant Medal in 2019.
