New Grandparents for New Grandchildren
Grandparents have changed. As compared with the past, they’re healthier, wealthier and better informed. While in the past they would watch the family affairs from afar, now they take on a main role, offering three contributions: good economic support, organizational support, affective richness that becomes a huge resource whenever parents divorce. Besides representing our historical memory, grandparents withhold traditional skills that deserve to be transmitted. Meanwhile, however, grandchildren have changed too: they face very few concrete experiences, yet they have encyclopaedic knowledge. Incapable of using a needle or a shovel, they play with the PlayStation, send messages and surf the Internet. For the first time ever grandparents and grandchildren can teach each other things, exchanging their mutual skills to the benefit of both parties.
