Scott: future’s first explorer
When, during summer of 1910, the Terranova set sail from Cardiff to take Robert Falcon Scott’s team to Ross Sea, boarding not only the explorers who were to reach the South Pole but also a group of scientists, biologists, geologists, chemists, the spirit of the mission became clear. It was not only a matter of exploring untouched ice but also of revealing its mysteries, its fauna and flora. The team that Scott made up was the most modern and futuristic team that could be formed in those years.
Tractors and first-rate cinematographic and photographic equipment accompanied the expedition. The latter were entrusted to the Californian Herbert Ponting who documented the immense scientific work carried out at the base. The explorers' march was instead immortalized by a few images that survived the polar ice and by Scott's diary, which would record everything, with a crystalline prose, to the extreme limit: an experiment in ruthless and scientific analysis of man's ability to resist to the toughest situations.

Filippo Tuena won the Grinzane Cavour Award with Tutti i sognatori (Fazi, 1999) and the Bagutta Award with Le variazioni Reinach (Rizzoli, 2005). He wrote Ultimo parallelo (2013), awarded by the Viareggio award, Memoriali sul caso Schumann (2016), Com’è trascorsa la notte (2017) and Le galanti (2019), all published by Il Saggiatore. He also curated Robert F. Scott. I diari del Polo (2009) and the photographic book Scott in Antartide (2011) for Nutrimenti.
