Clandestine networks. A network of partisans: the GAP groups in Rome and the attack in Via Rasella

In Nazi-occupied Rome, a group of twentysomething members of the GAPs- Patriotic Action Groups – risk their lives every day throwing bombs or shooting against the German and fascist forces. Like all Resistance groups, their clandestine network is coordinated by political commanders of the highest ranks, connected to the Italian government. When in March of 1944 they plan an attack against the German column transiting through via Rasella, en route for the Viminale, they have no way of knowing that theirs will be the bloodiest attack endured by the Nazis in a Western European city, and that a terrible retaliation would follow: the Adreatine massacre.

Alessandro Barbero, historian and writer, is Professor of Medieval History at the University of Eastern Piedmont and Vercelli. He contributes to the programmes “Passato e presente” and “a.C.d.C.” aired on Rai Storia. Since 2023 he has been the star of the programme “In viaggio con Barbero”, on LA7. In the same year he started for Chora Media “Chiedilo a Barbero”, a podcast in which he answers questions on history sent in by listeners.
